19 Killed In Massive Nepal Protest, Home Minister Resigns

Nepal’s capital Kathmandu witnessed violent scenes as Nepal Gen-Z protests over social media ban turn deadly, leaving at least 19 people dead and more than 300 injured. The protests erupted after the government blocked 26 popular apps, including Facebook, YouTube, and X.

Thousands of young demonstrators marched in Kathmandu demanding freedom of expression and action against corruption. Protesters broke curfew restrictions and stormed restricted areas near Parliament. Police used water cannons, teargas, and rubber bullets to control the crowd. Two people, including a journalist from Kantipur Television, were hit by rubber bullets.

The situation worsened after some protesters entered the Parliament compound. Authorities extended curfew hours to cover sensitive areas, including the residences of the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister. Army troops were also deployed in the capital.

Protests quickly spread to other cities like Pokhara, where demonstrators damaged the Chief Minister’s office. The unrest forced Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak to resign, while Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli called an emergency cabinet meeting.
