The government plans to develop 3-nanometre chips by 2032 as part of its push for technology self-reliance. Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this vision at an event in New Delhi. He said India aims to become self-reliant in 75% of key technology categories within the next four years.
Mr. Vaishnaw said 3-nanometre chips represent advanced semiconductor technology and will place India among leading global chip makers. He stressed that the government wants to strengthen the entire semiconductor ecosystem, from design to manufacturing.
The minister said the focus will be on six major systems to ensure complete and balanced growth of the semiconductor sector. These include chip design, fabrication, packaging, testing, equipment, and materials. According to him, this approach will help India build strong domestic capabilities.
He also highlighted government support through policies, funding, and infrastructure development. Industry participation and skilled manpower will play a key role in achieving these goals.
Experts said the plan could reduce dependence on imports and boost innovation, jobs, and economic growth. The initiative marks a major step toward making India a global technology and semiconductor hub.
