34 Lakh Aadhaar Holders Marked ‘Deceased’ in West Bengal, UIDAI Tells ECI
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has informed the Election Commission of India (ECI) that around 34 lakh Aadhaar card holders in West Bengal have been identified as deceased. In addition, UIDAI reported that approximately 13 lakh individuals who never possessed Aadhaar cards have also passed away in the state. The communication aims to help the ECI maintain accurate electoral rolls and prevent discrepancies in voter lists. Officials highlighted that periodic updating of Aadhaar data and cross-verification with death registries is crucial to ensure both administrative and electoral integrity. The UIDAI has reportedly advised state authorities to remove the deceased entries from government databases to avoid misuse. The data is expected to assist in cleaning up the voter list ahead of upcoming elections, ensuring that only eligible, living citizens are able to exercise their franchise.
