Washington: US President Donald Trump has urged NATO and the European Union to hit China with tariffs of up to 100%. He said the tariffs should stay until the Russia-Ukraine war ends.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump accused NATO allies of not giving full support. He criticised countries still buying Russian oil. “The purchase of Russian oil, by some, has been shocking! Anyway, I am ready to ‘go’ when you are,” he wrote.
Trump argued that China has a “strong grip over Russia.” He claimed tariffs would force Moscow to negotiate peace. He promised that once peace is restored, the tariffs would be fully withdrawn.
Calling the conflict a “deadly, but ridiculous war,” Trump said thousands had died in just one week. He insisted the war would never have started under his leadership, branding it “Biden’s and Zelenskyy’s war.”
Trump also pushed the EU to target India with tariffs. His demand marks a shift from sanctioning Russia directly to pressuring its trade partners.
The proposal comes as the EU still imports 19% of its natural gas from Russia. Washington last month also slapped a 50% tariff on Indian goods tied to Moscow.
