Maharashtra MP Supriya Sule’s recent remarks on reservations have sparked widespread discussion. Speaking on an NDTV program, she emphasized that reservation benefits should reach only those who genuinely need them. Sule explained that her parents are educated, which is why she did not seek any reservation.
She stated, “ If my parents had been uneducated or backward , I would have applied for reservation. But in my case, doing so would have been shameful .” She highlighted that reservation is intended to support children from families lacking educational resources or opportunities, ensuring they can access quality education and better prospects in life.
Sule’s candid explanation reflects her belief in merit-based achievement while recognizing the importance of affirmative action for underprivileged communities. Her remarks have reignited debates on the implementation and fairness of reservation policies in India, underscoring the balance between equity and meritocracy in educational and professional opportunities.
