The rise of AI shorter workweek jobs could fundamentally change how people work, according to Zoom CEO Eric Yuan. Yuan believes artificial intelligence (AI) will automate repetitive tasks, allowing businesses to adopt a three- or four-day workweek, giving employees more time for creativity, learning, and personal life.
Yuan told The New York Times, “Every company will support three days, four days a week. I think this ultimately frees up everyone’s time. If AI can make all of our lives better, why do we need to work for five days a week?” This suggests a major shift in workplace culture as automation and AI take over routine responsibilities.
However, the transition to AI shorter workweek jobs may also cause some positions to disappear. Entry-level coding tasks, for example, can now be handled by AI, but humans will still be required to manage systems and oversee digital agents. “You create a lot of digital agents, and you need someone to manage those agents,” Yuan explained, emphasizing that supervisory and technical roles will remain in demand.
The CEO also highlighted that while some roles may vanish, new opportunities will emerge in AI management, system oversight, and automation support. Industry leaders like Jensen Huang of Nvidia and Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase agree that AI will reshape work hours and job responsibilities globally.
Yuan predicts that businesses will increasingly move toward three- or four-day workweeks, allowing employees to focus on higher-value work while AI handles repetitive tasks.
