Andhra Pradesh Launches Sanitation Awards to Drive Cleaner Cities
The Andhra Pradesh government has announced the launch of the Swachh Andhra Awards, a state-wide initiative aimed at encouraging improved cleanliness and sanitation practices across Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). The awards will be distributed in 16 different categories and are scheduled to be presented on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti.
The awards are part of a broader campaign to strengthen urban sanitation infrastructure, promote citizen participation, and recognize best practices in waste management. Municipalities and corporations will be judged on parameters such as solid waste processing, sewage treatment, public toilet access, and cleanliness of public spaces.
In addition, the government has taken several supportive measures including:
Formalizing 50,000 ragpickers and providing them with health kits and protective gear
Promoting door-to-door waste segregation
Accelerating the setup of six new waste-to-energy plants to reduce landfill dependence
The initiative not only aims to improve hygiene and public health but also to generate employment and raise environmental awareness. Officials emphasized that public participation is key, and citizen feedback will also influence the final scores of competing cities.
