Chennai’s Krishna Water Supply at Risk; Chembarambakkam Boost Offers Temporary Relief. ::
Chennai’s Krishna water supply from Andhra Pradesh is expected to stop by end of September, due to reduced inflows from the Kandaleru reservoir. This could impact city water availability if monsoon rains are delayed.
To manage the situation, the Water Resources Department (WRD) is boosting storage at Chembarambakkam reservoir. Feeder canals are being repaired, and water is being diverted from Poondi reservoir when needed.
Currently, the city’s main reservoirs—Poondi, Chembarambakkam, Red Hills, Cholavaram, and Thervoy Kandigai—hold moderate levels. Without additional inflows, Chennai may have to revise its water supply schedule.
WRD officials are coordinating with Andhra Pradesh to ensure any remaining Krishna water is fully utilized. If the northeast monsoon arrives late or weak, authorities may introduce water rationing to avoid shortages.
Residents are urged to use water judiciously as supply pressures increase in the coming weeks.
