Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Ayushman Bharat Revolution in Public Healthcare has transformed lives by ensuring affordable treatment and financial security. As the scheme completed seven years on Tuesday (September 23, 2025), he stressed that it has brought dignity to beneficiaries, especially the poor and elderly.
Launched in 2018, Ayushman Bharat provides an annual health cover of ₹5 lakh. It includes poor households and all senior citizens above the age of 70. PM Modi wrote on X, “Today we mark 7 years of Ayushman Bharat. This initiative anticipated future needs and focused on affordable, top-quality healthcare. Thanks to it, India is witnessing a revolution in public healthcare.”
The Prime Minister also highlighted how scale, compassion, and technology are driving empowerment. He said Ayushman Bharat Revolution in Public Healthcare proves India’s ability to deliver large-scale welfare with efficiency.
Officials revealed that the scheme now covers more than 55 crore citizens, making it the world’s largest health assurance programme. Over 42 crore Ayushman cards have already been issued, enabling easy access to hospitals and treatment.
The impact is visible in spending patterns. Government expenditure on health has increased from 29% to 48%. At the same time, out-of-pocket expenses for families dropped from 63% to 39%. Authorities said millions of families avoided debt during illnesses because of the scheme.
According to official estimates, Ayushman Bharat protects over six crore families from poverty every year. “When illness strikes, it should not push families into financial ruin. This scheme gives both protection and dignity,” said a government statement.
Seven years on, Ayushman Bharat Revolution in Public Healthcare stands as a milestone in India’s welfare journey. It continues to bridge gaps in access, reduce inequality, and set a global example for universal health coverage.
