The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that the state cannot exploit workers on contract for years. The judges said keeping employees on contract for permanent jobs violates Articles 14, 16, and 21 of the Constitution.
The court ordered the Punjab government to regularise the services of firemen within six weeks. These men have worked for more than ten years on contract. If the government fails to act, the firemen will be treated as regular employees automatically.
The order also gives them credit for their past service. This means their seniority and benefits will remain safe. The ruling protects the rights of workers and gives hope to others facing the same issue.
