Why Heart Attacks Are Rising Among the Young

Young man recovering after heart attack due to lifestyle diseases

Heart attacks among young people are no longer rare. Studies show Indians experience heart problems much earlier than Western populations, with higher rates in their twenties and thirties. The rise in heart attacks among the young is worrying, but awareness and lifestyle changes can reverse the trend.

Take the case of Pranav, a 34-year-old IT professional from Mohali. Stress, late-night work, smoking, and drug use led to a sudden heart attack. An emergency angioplasty saved him. With family support, he quit smoking and drugs, began exercising, ate a balanced diet, and shed five kilos. Now, he needs only one tablet for blood pressure.

Another case is of a 28-year-old woman with hypertension, pre-diabetes, and weight issues. Six months of lifestyle changes helped her lose eight kilos and normalize her sugar and blood pressure without medicines.

Poor sleep cycles, unhealthy diets, excessive screen time, gym overtraining, smoking, and drugs are all fueling heart disease. The good news: young people are becoming more alert. Early screening, timely medical advice, and heart-friendly habits like balanced eating, moderate exercise, proper sleep, and stress control can save lives.
