Belaganj Assembly Turns Into a Power Game

Belaganj Assembly election, MY equation, Bihar politics

Belaganj Assembly is witnessing a fierce political battle, once a stronghold of the RJD for 34 years. In the 2024 by-election, JDU’s Manorama Devi defeated RJD’s Dr. Vishwanath Kumar Singh, ending RJD’s dominance. The win, supported by Jan Suraj candidate Mohammad Amjad’s 17,285 votes, reshaped the local political scene.

Belaganj politics revolves around the MY equation (Muslim-Yadav). With nearly 300,000 people, the seat has 70,000 Yadavs and 60,000 Muslims, making their votes decisive. Other groups include Bhumihars, Rajputs, Koeris, Banias, and Scheduled Castes.

Key election issues are clean drinking water, better schools, and road construction. In the last five years, roads, hand pumps, and water facilities were built, but promises like canal cleaning and land distribution for Mahadalits remain unfulfilled.

The contest is now between JDU’s development pitch and RJD’s attempt to regain its lost base. A single misstep could decide the outcome. With history, caste equations, and fresh promises, Belaganj Assembly election is truly a game of political checkmate.
