India-EU Launch Ideathon on Marine Plastics

India and the EU launch Ideathon to fight marine plastic litter, inviting startups and researchers to co-develop sustainable solutions.

India and the European Union have launched an Ideathon to tackle marine plastic litter. Startups, researchers, businesses, and stakeholders from both regions are invited to co-develop innovative solutions. Dr. Parvinder Maini, Scientific Secretary at OPSA, said the initiative aims for solutions that are globally relevant and locally effective.

Highlighting India’s efforts, Maini cited the Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar campaign and the ban on single-use plastics. She emphasized research, innovation, and collaboration as essential to addressing plastic pollution in India and Europe.

Signe Ratso, Deputy Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, said the Ideathon strengthens India-EU cooperation. Participants are encouraged to explore collaborative solutions to tackle marine pollution, protect marine life, public health, and coastal economies.

Presentations on the current state of marine litter were made by Professor Hoysala N. Chanakya of IISc Bangalore and John Hanus of the European Commission. The Ideathon framework, process, and timelines were shared, with applications open until October 2, 2025, inviting active participation to create sustainable, practical solutions.
