Protests for and against Ecuador’s President as Emergency Declared in 10 Provinces
Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency in 10 provinces due to escalating unrest. The protests began after the government removed a diesel subsidy, raising prices from $1.80 to $2.80 per gallon.
In Quito, both pro- and anti-government rallies took place. Protesters chanted slogans like “Diesel goes up, everything goes up” and “Out with Noboa.” Security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds when some tried to breach police lines.
The state of emergency limits certain freedoms but allows peaceful protests. The government insists the subsidy removal is needed for economic stability and warns against violence.
Negotiations between the government and Indigenous leaders continue amid the tense situation.
