Russian Drone Strike Hits Ukrainian Train Station

Russian drone strike Ukraine

A Russian drone attacked a railway station in Shostka, Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine on Saturday, wounding at least 30 people. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the strike as “savage.” Victims include both passengers and railway staff.

Zelensky shared a video showing a train carriage twisted and engulfed in flames, with windows shattered and metal mangled. He stressed that Russia must have known civilians were present during the strike.

The station lies just 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the Russian border. Since invading Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, hitting transport and logistics.

In a separate series of strikes overnight, Russian forces cut power to around 50,000 homes in the northern Chernigiv region. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military claimed it had struck a major oil refinery in Russia’s Leningrad region.

Kyiv has promised to step up long-range drone attacks on Russian energy sites, calling them fair retaliation for Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukrainian cities and power networks. The fighting highlights the increasing targeting of civilian and critical infrastructure, escalating tensions along the border.
