Advocate Throws Shoe at CJI BR Gavai in Courtroom Drama
Advocate Rakesh Kishore attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai during a Supreme Court hearing. He shouted, “Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahenge” (“Won’t tolerate insult to Sanatan”) before being detained by court staff.
The incident occurred during proceedings linked to the Khajuraho idol restoration case, where past remarks by Justice Gavai had sparked outrage among some groups.
CJI Gavai remained calm, stating, “I am not distracted… this doesn’t affect me,” and continued proceedings without interruption.
Security officials removed the advocate from the courtroom. The Bar Council and Supreme Court administration condemned the act, calling it a serious breach of courtroom decorum and security.
An inquiry is underway into how the lawyer brought a shoe into the court and whether further action, including suspension or arrest, will follow.
The shocking act drew wide public and legal community condemnation.
