India’s Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved rail multitracking projects worth ₹24,634 crore across Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh. These projects aim to modernize the railway network, improve connectivity, and boost both freight and passenger movement. They will span 1,184 kilometers and are expected to be completed within five years.
The Ministry of Railways will lead the implementation. It plans to double and triple existing railway lines to reduce congestion and increase efficiency. These rail multitracking projects worth ₹24,634 crore support the PM Gati Shakti initiative, which promotes integrated infrastructure development. Funding will come through Gross Budgetary Support.
Maharashtra will upgrade freight corridors, helping industrial zones and ports. Odisha will gain better access to mining regions and tribal areas. Chhattisgarh will strengthen links to coal and steel hubs. These improvements will create jobs and stimulate local economies.
In addition to economic benefits, the projects will enhance safety and reliability. Faster trains and fewer delays will improve passenger satisfaction. The increased capacity will also allow Indian Railways to handle rising demand for goods transport, especially in resource-rich regions.
