HC Declines Stay on GR Granting Kunbi Status to Marathas, Seeks State’s Clarification

The Bombay High Court has declined to grant an interim stay on the Maharashtra government’s controversial Government Resolution (GR) that grants Kunbi status to Marathas under the OBC category. The court was hearing multiple petitions challenging the GR, with petitioners alleging that it was issued under “political pressure” and lacked adequate supporting data.
The pleas argued that extending OBC status to a politically dominant community like the Marathas, without a proper socio-economic and caste-based study, undermines the reservation framework meant for genuinely backward groups.
While refusing an immediate stay, the court has sought a detailed response from the state, indicating that the matter raises serious constitutional and legal questions. The decision is seen as a temporary relief for the state government, but the legal battle is far from over.
The case is likely to have significant implications for caste-based reservations and political dynamics in Maharashtra.
