Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla showcases India’s parliamentary leadership and democratic initiatives at Barbados Commonwealth meet.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla chaired a workshop on ‘Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy and Tackling the Digital Divide’ at the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Barbados. He highlighted India’s role in promoting democracy, human rights, and inclusive growth across the Commonwealth. India contributes to initiatives like the Commonwealth Youth Programme and the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation.

During the session, Birla showcased India’s leadership in climate action. He noted that carbon intensity reduction targets were met ahead of schedule. He also cited initiatives such as the Green Hydrogen Mission and solar parks, emphasizing sustainable growth and environmental responsibility.

The Speaker stressed India’s progress in digital transformation, women and youth empowerment, and citizen engagement. These efforts have strengthened transparency, inclusivity, and sustainability in governance. Birla shared updates on India’s technological and democratic advancements with global parliamentary leaders during the conference sessions.

Birla attended the opening ceremony and met Speakers and parliamentarians from across the world. The Indian delegation includes Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh, MPs Anurag Sharma, D. Purandeswari, K. Sudhakar, Rekha Sharma, Ajeet Madhavrao Gopchade, and Secretaries-General Utpal Kumar Singh and P.C. Mody. He is also scheduled to meet Barbados leadership and the Indian diaspora during the visit.
