A 23-year-old MBBS student from Odisha was gang-raped near a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, on Friday night. She studies at IQ City Medical College in the Shivapur area.
Police said the student went out with a male friend around 8:30 p.m. when a group of men stopped them near the college gate. The men took her to a wooded area and raped her. Her father said the friend ran away and may also be involved. He claimed that the friend misled his daughter and took her to a deserted spot. The attackers also stole her mobile phone and Rs 5,000.
Doctors admitted the survivor to a hospital in Durgapur. Her condition remains critical. Police have started an investigation and questioned several people, including her friend. Officers have also recorded her statement.
The state health department has asked the college for a report. A team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) is visiting Durgapur to meet the survivor and her parents.
The case has sparked outrage in West Bengal, where women’s safety is already under question after a series of campus rape incidents in the past year.
