Dalit IPS Officer’s Suicide Puts BJP Govt in Haryana Under Pressure
The suicide of Dalit IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar has sparked political uproar in Haryana. In his suicide note, Kumar alleged caste-based discrimination and harassment by senior police officers. He also cited being denied basic rights, such as leave during personal emergencies.
His wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, has demanded action against those named in the note, urging charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The incident has intensified criticism of the BJP-led state government.
Opposition parties, including Congress, AAP, and BSP, have condemned the incident and accused the government of failing to protect Dalits—even within the bureaucracy. With Scheduled Castes making up a significant portion of Haryana’s population, the issue could impact political dynamics.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has assured a full investigation and promised accountability, saying no official, regardless of rank, will be spared if found guilty.
