Justice Over Punishment: Amit Shah Highlights Impact of Criminal Law Reforms

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stated that India’s newly introduced criminal laws mark a transformative shift from a punishment-driven system to one centered on justice. Speaking on the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and related legal reforms, Shah emphasized that the new framework is designed to make the justice system more efficient, fair, and technology-driven. One key feature is the reduced need for physical appearances in court, which will speed up trials and lower the burden on judicial infrastructure. Additionally, Shah noted that the changes will help curb instances of undertrial prisoners escaping from police custody by facilitating digital hearings and secure custody protocols. The reforms aim to modernize Indian criminal jurisprudence while ensuring that victims’ rights and timely justice take precedence. Shah reiterated that these laws reflect a shift in mindset—from retribution to reformation—making the legal system more responsive and humane.
