In a major political shift, Sanjeev Sharma Bittu joins Congress, leaving the BJP to return to his former party. The former Patiala Mayor officially joined the Indian National Congress in Delhi on Sunday, in the presence of senior party leaders K. C. Venugopal and Bhupesh Baghel.
Bittu earlier served as Patiala Mayor during the government of former Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh. He began his political career as a municipal councillor, winning unopposed in the Patiala municipal elections, and later rose to the position of mayor due to his strong local support.
The Congress party announced his return through a post on X, welcoming him back into the fold. The message highlighted his leadership experience and loyalty to the Congress ideology.
Bittu had followed Capt. Amarinder Singh when the latter joined the BJP. In the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, he contested from the Patiala Rural seat but was defeated by AAP’s Balbir Singh. With this comeback, Sanjeev Sharma Bittu joins Congress once again, strengthening the party’s base in the Patiala region ahead of upcoming political battles.
