Politics in Bihar has flared up after BJP MLA Ketki Singh from Uttar Pradesh allegedly insulted the Mithila turban at an NDA workers’ conference in Alinagar. During the event, Maithili Thakur, BJP candidate and folk singer, was also present. When Singh was honored with the Mithila turban, she questioned its meaning. After being told it represents Mithila’s pride, she replied that the honor belonged to “Maithili Thakur, not Mithila,” and threw the turban on the table. The act quickly went viral, creating a massive Mithila turban controversy across social media.
Outrage spread through Darbhanga, with locals and the Mithila Student Union condemning the act as disrespectful to regional heritage. Several BJP leaders, including Bihar minister Hari Sahni and MP Dr. Gopalji Thakur, were present at the event. Facing mounting criticism, Ketki Singh later apologized for her remark and action.
