Justice Surya Kant Appointed as 53rd Chief Justice of India
Justice Surya Kant has been appointed as the 53rd Chief Justice of India and will assume office on November 24, 2025, succeeding Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. His tenure will last until February 9, 2027, when he turns 65.
Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Kant began his legal career in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and later served as Advocate General of Haryana. He became Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019.
Known for his judgments on constitutional law, gender equality, and free speech, Justice Kant has earned a reputation for balanced and progressive interpretation of law. His appointment marks a new phase for the judiciary, with expectations that he will focus on judicial efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in the country’s highest court.
