Kashmir Administration Warns Against Fake Journalists Misusing Media for Extortion
Authorities in Kashmir have issued a stern warning against individuals impersonating journalists to carry out acts of blackmail and extortion. The statement, released by the Joint Director of Information, Kashmir, said that several people have been misusing the name of the media to coerce officials and spread unverified or defamatory content against public institutions and officers. The official emphasized that such activities not only harm the credibility of genuine journalists but also erode public trust in the media. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to take strict legal action against those involved in impersonation or unethical practices under relevant criminal laws. Authorities also urged citizens and government departments to verify credentials before engaging with anyone claiming to represent the press. The statement reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting legitimate media freedom while curbing misuse of journalistic identity for personal or political gain.
