Every winter, Delhi sinks under a toxic haze that chokes its people and paralyzes daily life. Schools close, hospitals overflow, and air quality plunges to dangerous levels. A viral Reddit post this week offered a raw explanation — ego.
Titled “How ego is destroying Delhi through pollution,” the post struck a nerve online. “Farmers refuse advice, politicians dodge responsibility, and citizens won’t give up SUVs or firecrackers. Everyone wants to be right instead of responsible. Ego > Oxygen,” one user wrote. Thousands agreed, calling Delhi’s pollution a human failure, not just an environmental one.
According to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, air pollution caused nearly 15% of deaths in Delhi in 2023 — about 17,188 lives lost. Doctors report a sharp rise in respiratory illnesses as the Air Quality Index hit 303 on November 1.
Pulmonologist Dr. Gopi Chand Khilnani warned that toxic air can trigger fatal pneumonia. “If possible, leave Delhi till December,” he advised. Studies from AIIMS show children in the capital have stunted lung growth and high asthma rates.
The Reddit debate ended with one stark truth: Delhi doesn’t lack solutions — it lacks the will to act.
