35 Tamil Nadu Fishermen Arrested by Sri Lankan Navy for Alleged Maritime Violation
The Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday arrested 35 fishermen from Tamil Nadu for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and fishing in Sri Lankan waters. The fishermen, hailing from Nagapattinam and Pudukottai districts, were operating three mechanised boats when they were intercepted near Delft Island in northern Sri Lanka. The boats and fishing gear were also seized. According to officials, the arrested fishermen have been taken to Kankesanthurai for further investigation. Families of the fishermen have appealed to the Indian government to secure their immediate release, citing accidental crossing of the boundary during deep-sea fishing. This incident adds to a series of similar arrests in recent months, highlighting ongoing tensions between Indian and Sri Lankan authorities over fishing rights in the Palk Strait. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is expected to raise the issue with the Centre to ensure diplomatic intervention.
