Former US President Donald Trump has claimed that Pakistan is among several nations actively testing nuclear weapons. His remarks came as Washington debated whether to resume its own nuclear testing after more than 30 years.
Speaking to CBS News, Trump said Russia, China, North Korea, and Pakistan are already conducting tests. “Russia’s testing, China’s testing, and Pakistan’s been testing,” he said. “We’re an open society. We talk about it because you’ll report it.”
Trump argued that the US must test its weapons if others continue doing so. He claimed that some countries conduct underground tests to avoid detection. “You feel a vibration. They test and we don’t. We have to test,” he added.
He also said the US holds more nuclear weapons than any other nation and has discussed disarmament with Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright later clarified that current US plans involve only non-nuclear system tests. “These are not nuclear explosions,” he told Fox News. “We’re testing systems to ensure performance and safety.”
The proposed tests aim to improve new weapons and ensure future systems meet safety and design standards.
