Muslim Candidates Face Off in Four Bihar Assembly Seats

Muslim candidates face off

Bihar is witnessing a rare political battle where Muslim candidates are contesting directly against each other in four assembly seats — Araria, Jokihat, Bahadurganj, and Amour. Both major alliances have fielded Muslim candidates, turning these constituencies into close contests.

In Araria, the Congress has nominated Abidur Rahman, while AIMIM’s Mohammad Manzoor Alam, JDU’s Shagufta Azim, and Jan Suraj Party’s Farhat Ara Begum are also in the race. Congress’s Abidur Rahman had earlier secured victories in 2015 and 2020, with LJP’s Zakir Hussain Khan winning in 2010.

The Jokihat seat has eight contestants, with only one Hindu candidate. RJD’s Shahnawaz, JDU’s Manzar Alam, AIMIM’s Mohammad Murshid Alam, and Jan Suraj’s Sarfaraz Alam are leading the fray. This seat has elected only Muslim MLAs since 1972.

In Bahadurganj, nine candidates are contesting, including two Hindus. AIMIM’s Mohammad Anzar Naimi won in 2020, while Congress’s Mohammad Tausif Alam held the seat earlier.

Amour continues its decades-long trend, having elected only Muslim representatives since 1980. JDU’s Saba Zafar, Congress’s Abdul Jalil Mastan, AIMIM’s Akhtarul Iman, and Jan Suraj’s Afroz are contesting here.

These four seats highlight Bihar’s unique political and communal dynamics during this election season.
