Putin Orders Feasibility Study on Resuming Russian Nuclear Tests

Putin Orders Feasibility Study

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin’s order to assess the feasibility of resuming nuclear tests is now under implementation. The directive, issued during a Security Council meeting on November 5, tasks several key departments with preparing proposals. These include the Foreign Ministry, Defence Ministry, intelligence agencies, and civilian institutions.

Lavrov told reporters that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun working on Putin’s instructions. “The public will be informed of the results,” he said, according to state agencies TASS and RIA Novosti.

Putin’s move follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement that the United States plans to restart nuclear weapons testing after more than three decades. Lavrov added that Moscow has not received any official clarification from Washington about Trump’s comments.

During the Security Council session, Putin emphasized that Russia would resume nuclear testing only if the United States acts first. The decision underscores growing tensions between the two nuclear powers over the future of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), which both countries have observed for decades.
