The Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed a plea seeking a CBI probe into the death of senior IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, alleged to have died by suicide. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry, ruled that there was no undue delay or negligence in the ongoing investigation, which a Special Investigation Team (SIT) currently leads.
The plea, filed by Navneet Kumar, raised concerns about the impartiality of the Chandigarh Police probe and highlighted that one of the officers investigating had also committed suicide. The petitioner argued the case involved complex issues of alleged caste-based persecution and a criminal conspiracy implicating senior IPS and IAS officers.
The court asked the petitioner to justify why the investigation should transfer to the CBI, emphasizing that transfers only occur under extraordinary circumstances. The SIT consists of around 14 members, including IPS and DSP officers, working daily on the case. The petition did not convince the bench to order a central agency probe.
