Trump Wants Skilled Foreign Workers to Train Americans Before Returning Home: U.S. Treasury Secretary
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday clarified President Donald Trump’s remarks on the H-1B visa programme, stating that the President wants skilled overseas workers to help train Americans before eventually returning to their home countries. Responding to questions about Trump’s comments that the U.S. “lacks certain talents,” Bessent said the administration values global expertise but aims to strengthen the domestic workforce. “President Trump believes foreign talent can play a transitional role — to transfer skills, build capacity, and ensure America becomes self-reliant in critical sectors,” he said. The statement follows growing debate over the future of the H-1B programme, widely used by Indian tech professionals. Critics argue that the policy could discourage innovation, while supporters claim it will prioritize jobs for U.S. citizens. Bessent added that upcoming reforms will balance America’s economic needs with fair opportunities for skilled immigrants.
