“Manipur Poppy Cultivation Crackdown Targets Kangpokpi Reserve”

Security forces uprooting illegal poppy fields in Kangpokpi Reserve Forest, Manipur

Imphal, Manipur: Security forces, in collaboration with the Kangpokpi Forest Division, have successfully destroyed 53 acres of illegal poppy cultivation in the Kangpokpi Reserve Forest, a protected wildlife area. The major operation, conducted on November 19, targeted six sites across the Phailengkot–Makhan hill ranges within the Koubru Reserve Forest, highlighting the state’s proactive approach in the ongoing War on Drugs.

During the raid, officials demolished seven temporary farm huts used by cultivators and seized 35 packets of salt, reportedly utilized in processing and maintaining the poppy crops. Authorities stressed that such coordinated enforcement actions are essential to curb narcotics production and maintain law and order in ecologically sensitive regions.

The Kangpokpi Reserve Forest has experienced rising encroachment and illegal agricultural activity in recent years, raising concerns among environmentalists and local authorities. Poppy cultivation in such protected areas not only threatens biodiversity but also fuels illegal drug networks in the region.

Officials announced that enhanced surveillance, regular patrolling, and joint operations will continue to monitor vulnerable areas to prevent the recurrence of illegal cultivation. The Manipur government and security agencies are working closely to tackle the dual challenge of environmental conservation and drug control, recognising the significant social, economic, and ecological impact of such activities.

Authorities noted that this successful crackdown sends a strong message against encroachment and narcotics-related farming, reinforcing Manipur’s commitment to protecting natural resources while combating illegal drug production. The operation also aims to educate communities on the risks associated with illicit cultivation and encourage sustainable livelihoods in forest-adjacent areas.

This operation marks a crucial milestone in the state’s wider campaign against illegal poppy cultivation, reaffirming the government’s dedication to law enforcement, environmental protection, and social well-being.
