Trump Claims Tariff Threat Averted India Pakistan War

Trump

US President Donald Trump has again claimed that he personally prevented a major conflict between India and Pakistan in May. He said he warned both countries that the United States would impose a 350 per cent tariff if they moved toward war. Trump made the comments at the US-Saudi Investment Forum in the presence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

He said India and Pakistan were preparing for a serious clash, even discussing nuclear options. Trump told them they could continue the dispute, but the United States would block all trade and apply heavy tariffs. He claimed this pressure forced both sides to pull back.

Trump said Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif later called and thanked him for saving millions of lives. He also said India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned him and confirmed that the situation had calmed and war was off the table. Trump praised his strategy and said no previous president used tariffs in this way to avoid global conflicts.

India has firmly denied third-party involvement. Officials said the ceasefire understanding came from direct talks between senior military leaders on May 10 after Operation Sindoor. India insists that negotiations with Pakistan remain a bilateral matter.
