What Are the Allegations in the 272-Signature Letter Against Rahul Gandhi?

A major political debate erupted after 272 retired judges, former bureaucrats and ex-servicemen issued an open letter countering Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s repeated criticism of the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The signatories accused Rahul Gandhi of attacking constitutional institutions by making “fact-free allegations” of vote theft. The letter states that such claims are an attempt to convert “political frustration into an institutional crisis,” warning that these attacks erode public trust in democratic processes.

According to the letter, targeting the Election Commission without evidence weakens constitutional safeguards and misleads voters. It asserts that the Commission operates independently and should not be undermined for political gains.

The issue became a focal point on Anjana Om Kashyap’s show Halla Bol, where the panel discussed whether the letter represents a genuine defence of institutions or a politically motivated counter to Rahul Gandhi’s statements.
