A New Zealand traveller has spoken out after a harassment incident during her solo trip in Sri Lanka went viral online. Molly, 24, from Christchurch, said she posted the video to raise awareness, but she never expected such a massive response. She received thousands of comments across platforms, and many supported her. However, she was surprised that some people began blaming her for travelling alone as a woman.
Molly said she even saw comments from women telling her she lacked survival skills or should travel with a man for protection. She expressed disappointment that many still hold such views, and she stressed that women should feel free to travel anywhere safely.
After the video spread, Molly contacted Sri Lankan police. Officers launched an investigation within hours. They conducted a manhunt and located the suspect within four days. The man was arrested and now faces court proceedings. Molly thanked the police for their fast and respectful response.
She added that one incident should not ruin Sri Lanka’s reputation. She said the country treated her well, and she felt safe during most of her month-long visit. Molly wants the growing conversation to help women who face harassment around the world every day.
