China is developing a massive deep-sea installation designed to survive a nuclear strike and operate for months without resupply. The structure, known as the Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility, measures 138 metres in length and 85 metres in width. It features a twin-hull semi-submersible design that keeps it stable in rough seas and powerful typhoons.
The platform can house up to 238 people for four months, supporting scientific work and communication needs far offshore. Scientists at Shanghai Jiao Tong University lead the project after a decade of planning and research. They use advanced metamaterial sandwich panels that turn extreme shockwaves into manageable pressure, improving safety during nuclear events.
Project leader Lin Zhongqin said the team is working to finish design and construction before 2028. The platform will match the size of the Chinese Fujian aircraft carrier, signalling serious ambition and engineering capability. The developers designed key compartments to protect navigation, communications and power systems during emergencies.
China calls the installation a civilian research project, but its design follows military nuclear-resistance standards. This facility represents a step toward long-term offshore operations in remote waters. It also shows growing investment in floating infrastructure that supports maritime science and strategic activity.
