Centre for Heat Resilience in Tamil Nadu Has Big Roadmap: Supriya Sahu
Tamil Nadu has launched a Centre for Heat Resilience with a comprehensive roadmap to tackle rising temperatures and extreme heat events. According to Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forests, the centre will serve as the state’s primary hub for planning, coordination, and implementation of heat-management strategies.
A key focus of the roadmap is the creation of high-resolution heat maps using satellite data and ground-level sensors to identify heat-vulnerable zones. These maps will help guide urban planning, infrastructure design, and targeted interventions in high-risk areas.
The Centre will also work on developing heat-action plans for districts, building technical capacity across departments, and designing long-term, scalable resilience projects. Another major component involves improving data systems to track heat-related health impacts and strengthening community outreach to protect vulnerable populations.
The initiative aims to enhance Tamil Nadu’s preparedness and reduce risks as heatwaves intensify due to climate change.
