GBA Launches Strict Drive to Recover Dues from Major Property Tax Defaulters

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has ordered an intensified crackdown on major property tax defaulters across the city. In a recent directive, the Chief Commissioner instructed officials from all five city corporations to identify top defaulters and begin immediate recovery of long-pending dues. The move comes amid a significant shortfall in annual tax collection, with less than half of the targeted amount recovered so far.
Officials have been asked to prioritise nearly 24,000 pending revision cases and more than 20,000 defaulters, some of whom owe very large sums. Daily review meetings have been mandated, and strict enforcement measures — including issuing notices, initiating legal action, and sealing commercial establishments — are being considered for persistent non-payers.
The crackdown is also tied to ongoing efforts to streamline property records through the e-khata system and the conversion of B-Khata properties to A-Khata, which is expected to widen the tax base and improve compliance.
