Thousands of pilgrims and devotees flocked to Old Goa as the Novena began, turning the historic town into a vibrant spiritual centre. Devotees gathered at the Basilica of Bom Jesus for the start of nine days of prayer and reflection dedicated to St Francis Xavier, also known as Goencho Saib.
The celebrations opened on Monday with Masses held throughout the day at the large pandal outside the Basilica. Worshippers attended services at 6 am, 7.15 am, 8.30 am, 9.45 am, 11 am, 3.30 pm, 5 pm, and 6.15 pm. The final Mass took place in English. The atmosphere stayed lively from morning to evening as thousands of pilgrims arrived for the special services.
This year’s theme highlights trust, perseverance, and spiritual courage. The message, “Faith does not disappoint us; hence, like St Francis Xavier, let us be Pilgrims of Hope,” encouraged many visitors. They shared that the theme gives them strength in difficult moments.
Several diocesan centres led the 3.30 pm Mass. These included Caritas Goa, CSJP, DCE, and DCSCM. Deaneries from Aldona, Canacona, and Mormugao guided the other services.
Pilgrims from neighbouring states also reached Old Goa early. They came with great enthusiasm to join one of Goa’s most important annual religious events.
