Uzbek sensation GM Javokhir Sindarov made history at just 19, winning the FIDE World Cup 2025 in Arpora. He defeated Chinese GM Wei Yi in a thrilling Rapid tie-break to claim the Viswanathan Anand Trophy and secure a spot in the 2026 Candidates Tournament. Sindarov’s win makes him the youngest World Cup champion ever, showcasing his extraordinary talent and composure under pressure.

The final match began with the Queen’s Gambit Declined. Wei Yi blundered with a g5 pawn push, giving Sindarov a strong advantage. Although Wei Yi neutralized the position in the first game, Sindarov struck decisively in the reverse colours with the Italian Game. Wei Yi missed a crucial rook sacrifice and later erred on his 57th move, allowing Sindarov to clinch the victory with a 2.5:1.5 aggregate.

At the prize distribution, Sindarov acknowledged India’s role in his journey, recalling his Asian U-7 championship in Delhi and the 2022 Chennai Olympiad gold medal. He expressed joy at returning to India to achieve this remarkable milestone. The win not only cements Sindarov’s reputation as a rising chess superstar but also adds a historic chapter to Uzbekistan’s sporting achievements.
