AIADMK, TVK Propose Revisions to Draft SOP for Political Meetings
The AIADMK and Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) have suggested several changes to the draft Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) formulated for conducting political meetings in Tamil Nadu. During a hearing on Thursday, the parties presented their concerns before a Bench comprising Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan, who directed them to submit their suggestions in writing on Friday.
The draft SOP was prepared to ensure public safety, regulate crowd management, and streamline permissions for political gatherings, especially in light of recent incidents that highlighted the need for stricter protocols. Both parties argued that some provisions were too restrictive and could hamper political outreach, election preparation, and general party activities.
The Bench clarified that the aim of the SOP is not to curb political expression but to establish a uniform and safe framework for events. The consolidated suggestions will be reviewed before finalising the guidelines.
