Kerala HC Urges TDB to Stop Pilgrims from Dumping Clothes in Pampa River
The Kerala High Court has directed the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to take effective measures to discourage Sabarimala pilgrims from discarding clothes in the Pampa river. The directive comes amid growing concerns over pollution and environmental degradation in the ecologically sensitive area.
The court observed that the long-standing practice of leaving used garments on the riverbank or in the water has contributed significantly to waste accumulation, affecting both the river ecosystem and the overall cleanliness of the pilgrimage route. It emphasised that the TDB must intensify awareness campaigns and provide adequate facilities for the responsible disposal of clothing and other materials.
The Bench urged officials to coordinate with environmental agencies and local bodies to strengthen waste management during the pilgrimage season. It also emphasised the importance of sensitising devotees to adopt eco-friendly practices, ensuring that religious rituals do not lead to irreversible harm to the Pampa and surrounding forests.
