Tamil Nadu Challenges CBI Takeover of Karur Stampede Probe
Tamil Nadu has approached the Supreme Court, expressing strong objections to the transfer of the Karur stampede investigation from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of senior state police officers to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The State argued that this move undermines its autonomy and sets a “dangerous precedent” for future cases.
The Supreme Court had cited the “political undertones” of the case as a rationale for assigning the probe to the CBI, a decision that the Tamil Nadu government contends is unnecessary and intrusive. Officials emphasized that the SIT had the expertise and local knowledge to handle the investigation effectively, and that the state police had already initiated thorough inquiries into the incident.
The Karur stampede, which occurred amid large public gatherings, resulted in multiple casualties, prompting widespread concern over crowd management and safety protocols. Tamil Nadu urged the Supreme Court to reconsider the CBI takeover and allow state authorities to complete the probe.
