Kerala and Tamil Nadu Collaborate on Mineral Sand Mining for Higher Output
Kerala and Tamil Nadu have announced a joint initiative to mine mineral sand, aiming to boost production capacity and improve resource utilisation for both States. According to assessments by Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd. (KMML), sourcing ilmenite—the key raw material for producing titanium dioxide—from Tamil Nadu is economically viable and supports Kerala’s value-addition processes.
Tamil Nadu, however, has proposed that both mining and value addition be carried out exclusively within its borders, citing the potential for increased industrial activity and employment generation. Discussions between the two governments are ongoing to establish a collaborative framework that balances economic benefits and operational efficiency.
Officials believe that the partnership could strengthen India’s position in the global titanium dioxide market by enhancing raw material availability and production capacity. Both States are working toward a mutually beneficial agreement to streamline extraction, processing, and long-term resource management.
