CFTRI Develops Specialized Foods for Astronauts, Athletes, and Elderly
The Mysuru-based Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) is focusing on developing specialized foods for astronauts, athletes, and India’s ageing population. The institute has shifted its research priorities toward advanced food technologies that address specific nutritional needs and enhance health outcomes.
CFTRI scientists are working on nutrient-dense, easy-to-digest, and long-shelf-life food products suitable for extreme conditions, such as space missions, and for athletes requiring optimized performance nutrition. For the elderly, the institute aims to create foods that are rich in essential nutrients, easy to consume, and beneficial for age-related health concerns.
The initiative aligns with India’s growing focus on health, wellness, and technological innovation in the food sector. Researchers are also exploring fortification, functional foods, and sustainable production methods. CFTRI’s efforts are expected to contribute to national priorities in space exploration, sports excellence, and senior citizen nutrition, positioning India as a leader in specialized food technology.
