Customs Simplification to Be Next Major Reform, Says Finance Minister

Finance Minister announced that the simplification of customs procedures will be the next major reform undertaken by the government. Speaking at a public event, she said the upcoming Union Budget—likely to be presented on February 1—may include key announcements aimed at easing trade processes and improving the efficiency of customs operations.
The Minister highlighted that current customs procedures can be time-consuming and complex, often slowing down imports and exports. Streamlining these systems is expected to reduce clearance times, lower logistics costs, and boost India’s competitiveness in global trade.
She added that the government is focusing on improving transparency, expanding digitisation, and reducing human interface to curb delays and corruption. The reform is also expected to support the manufacturing sector and promote exports under various national economic programmes. Officials believe that a simplified customs framework will attract more investment and strengthen India’s position as a global trade hub.
