US Approves Pakistan F-16 Upgrade Deal Worth $686 Million

The United States has approved a $686 million defence package to upgrade Pakistan’s F-16 fleet. The deal includes Link-16 data link systems, new avionics, cryptographic gear, training support, and extensive logistics. A 30-day review period in the US Congress has begun, and lawmakers are expected to analyse the package closely. India is monitoring the development.

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency said the upgrade will help Pakistan improve the safety and performance of its Block-52 and Mid Life Upgrade F-16 aircraft. Lockheed Martin will handle the work as the primary contractor.

US officials said the package supports Washington’s security goals by strengthening Pakistan’s counterterrorism capabilities. They added that the upgrades will improve coordination between the Pakistan Air Force and US forces during operations, training, and joint exercises. The enhancements are expected to keep the aircraft functional until 2040.

The DSCA also noted that Pakistan can integrate the new systems without difficulty and stressed that the regional military balance will remain unchanged. Major equipment in the package includes 92 Link-16 systems and six inert Mk-82 bomb bodies for integration tests.

Pakistan first requested these upgrades in 2021. The US delayed its response at the time due to diplomatic frictions.
