GMC to install GPS trackers on sanitation and engineering fleet

GMC to install GPS trackers on sanitation and engineering fleet as part of efforts to improve service delivery and accountability, officials said on Friday. The initiative aims to ensure real-time monitoring of vehicles used for waste management and public works.
Officials said GPS devices will be fitted to garbage collection vehicles, tractors, tipper trucks, and engineering department vehicles. The system will help track movement, monitor work schedules, and prevent misuse of vehicles. It will also help officials respond quickly to complaints from residents.
The civic body plans to integrate the GPS system with a central control room. Data from the trackers will be reviewed daily to assess performance and ensure timely completion of assigned tasks. Officials said the move would improve transparency and efficiency.
Senior GMC officials said better monitoring would lead to cleaner neighbourhoods and improved infrastructure maintenance. They added that the system would also help reduce fuel wastage and operational costs.
Sanitation workers will receive training on the new system to ensure smooth implementation. The civic body said the project would be rolled out in phases and reviewed regularly.Residents welcomed the decision and said technology-driven monitoring could improve the quality of civic services across the city.
